From the classrooms of Milford Mill High School in Baltimore, Maryland, to earning her undergraduate degree at Rider University, and later graduating from University of Phoenix, in Tucson, Arizona, Ms. Batten’s journey has always been guided by one clear calling–becoming a teacher. Even as a child, she knew education was her future. History was her favorite subject, which led her to pursue a degree in history with dreams of becoming a history teacher. However, when she moved to Tucson, there were no available history or social studies positions. Instead of waiting for the “perfect” opportunity, she stepped into middle school math, teaching for the first seven years of her career–proving that great teachers shine no matter the subject. Ms. Batten joined Sabino during the unique hybrid online/in person covid thing year of 2020, a time that challenged teachers and students alike. Through uncertainty and change, she remained dedicated, adaptable, and committed to her students. 

Outside the classroom, Mrs. Batten has a special story that shows just how connected she is to the Sabino community. Her husky, Winter, was gifted to her by a Sabino yoga student three years ago. Like a true teacher, she turned naming her new pup into a class activity–students submitted suggestions and voted. Mrs. Batten motivates students to stay active, build teamwork skills and challenge themselves both physically and mentally. She has brought energy, positivity, encouragement and heart to the Sabino gym.
