On Wednesday Coach McBrayer sat down to discuss how he feels about the upcoming season and his coaching philosophy.
Coach McBrayer feels this season will be really successful especially with the new turf field being installed. The field will certainly benefit several programs at Sabino but football will be the first to play on it.
Coach McBrayer didn’t always plan on being a football coach. He said that when he graduated from Sabino he planned to play college football but unfortunately it did not work out. Instead he had the opportunity to come back to Sabino under his head coach Jay Campos as the defensive coordinator and later worked his way up to become the youngest head football coach in Southern Arizona.
When it comes to coaching style, Coach McBrayer thinks of himself as a player’s coach and wants to see players “succeed in all aspects of life”. His core values on and off the field are hard work, team work, perseverance, and attacking your goals. “Football gives life lessons,” said Coach McBrayer when asked about his coaching style. He replied with “success is understanding what it takes to win” and he works with players to achieve those wins.
Some common challenges Coach McBrayer said his players face during the season are social media and getting to school. Sometimes it is hard for students to get to school because we have so many students open enrolled who may live far away. The success the school has (such as being an A rated school and having championship and award winning programs) is what keeps students coming back.
When asked what he was most excited about this season, Adrian Tellez said the season is going to be “immaculate”. If you’re wondering what this wide receiver/DB/kicker’s favorite fast food restaurant is – he says it’s Taco Bell.
Andree Moore (a guard and defensive tackle) says this season will be good and he’s confident in the success of the team this season. He also wants to “bring back the standard of Sabino”. He’s excited to play on the new field when it’s finished. His favorite fast food restaurant is Cane’s.
Aidan Willie, a wide receiver/corner back, says his goals are to “win state at the end of the year” and looks forward to playing on the new field. This sophomore’s favorite fast food restaurant is Cane’s.
Dylan thinks the design of the field is really cool and can’t wait to get on the new turf. He says “we are looking like a really good team” and wants to fix mistakes and keep moving forward. His goal for this season is to have a winning record and win state. This freshmen defensive/tight end’s favorite fast food restaurant is Chipotle.
“Success motivates success. The best players find motivation within themselves.” One can certainly see that our football team motivates themselves at every single game.
